Puerto Montt

The harbour
Puerto Montt lies at the head of the Reloncaví Sound in southern Chile, where the Central Valley meets the sea and the long maze of Patagonian channels and fjords begins. The town was founded in the nineteenth century, partly by German settlers.
It is the centre of Chile's salmon farming industry, and its port handles fish products, supplies for the farms, ferries to Chiloé and southern Patagonia, and cruise ships. The Angelmó market is known for seafood and crafts. Sailors notice the large tides of the sound and, on clear days, the snow-capped cones of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes.
