Valparaíso
Chile · South America
The harbour
Valparaíso lies on a wide bay on the central coast of Chile, facing the Pacific, with the city climbing steep hills right behind the harbour.
Before the Panama Canal opened, it was a key stop for ships rounding Cape Horn and one of the most important ports on the Pacific coast of South America. Today it handles containers, fruit exports and cruise ships, and is headquarters of the Chilean Navy. Its colourful hillside neighbourhoods and old funiculars are a World Heritage Site.
The bay is open to the north, and sailors must beware of strong northerly storms in winter.
