The harbour
Punta Arenas lies on the Brunswick Peninsula on the Strait of Magellan, in Chile's far south. Before the Panama Canal opened, it was an important stop for ships rounding South America, and it grew rich in the late nineteenth century from sheep farming and wool.
Today the port supports fishing, cargo, cruise ships and Antarctic research and tourism vessels, and the city is a free trade zone. Sailors notice the strong, persistent westerly winds, rapidly changing weather and cold water, as well as penguin colonies on nearby islands such as Magdalena.
