The harbour
Mar del Plata lies on the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires province, south of the capital. It is Argentina's best-known seaside resort, crowded with holidaymakers in summer, and also its leading fishing port.
The harbour is home to a large fleet of trawlers and smaller boats landing hake, squid and other fish, along with processing plants and an Argentine Navy submarine base. Sailors notice the colony of sea lions that lives on the breakwaters inside the port, and the colourful small fishing boats moored together near the docks.
