The harbour

Rio Grande is the main seaport of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. It lies on the channel connecting the huge Lagoa dos Patos with the Atlantic Ocean.

It exports soybeans, grain, frozen meat, tobacco and wood pulp from the farms and industries of the south, and handles containers. It is the southernmost major port in Brazil and also has a naval presence.

Sailors entering pass between two very long stone jetties, the Molhes da Barra, that keep the sandy channel open. Inside, the lagoon is wide but shallow, with ships confined to dredged channels.
