The harbour
Santos lies on the Atlantic coast of São Paulo state and is the busiest port in Latin America. It serves Brazil's largest industrial region around the city of São Paulo, linked to it by road and rail climbing the coastal mountains.
The port grew rich on coffee in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the old Coffee Exchange is now a museum. Today it ships sugar, soybeans, orange juice and containers. The city is also home to Santos FC, Pelé's club.
Sailors entering the estuary pass very close to city beaches, and ferries cross the channel to Guarujá.
