The harbour

Vitória, capital of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo, is built mainly on an island separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. The port system around it is one of the most important in Brazil for iron ore, much of it brought by rail from Minas Gerais to the Tubarão terminal.

The ports also handle steel, coffee, containers and general cargo.

Ships reaching the inner harbour pass through a narrow channel between the island and the city of Vila Velha. Sailors see the Convento da Penha, a sixteenth-century convent perched on a rocky hill above the entrance.
