The harbour

Salvador, the capital of Bahia state, stands at the entrance to the Bay of All Saints on Brazil's Atlantic coast. Founded by the Portuguese in 1549, it was the first capital of colonial Brazil and a major centre of the sugar trade and the Atlantic slave trade, which shaped its strong Afro-Brazilian culture.

Its historic Pelourinho district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The port handles containers and cruise ships. The city is split by a steep escarpment into a lower town by the water and an upper town, linked by the Lacerda Elevator, which sailors see clearly from the bay along with the round fort of São Marcelo.
