The harbour
Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará state, lies on Brazil's north-east Atlantic coast, just south of the equator. Its harbour at Mucuripe handles fuel, grain, general cargo and a fishing fleet, while the larger industrial port of Pecém lies some distance to the west.
The region is known for its steady trade winds, which make the coast popular for kitesurfing and power large wind farms. Fishermen here have long used jangadas, simple wooden sailing rafts that head out through the surf. Sailors notice the strong, constant easterly breeze and the long sandy beaches and dunes that line the coast.
