The harbour
Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, stands at the mouth of the Demerara River on the Atlantic coast. Much of the city lies below high-tide level and is protected by a long sea wall and drainage canals first laid out by the Dutch.
The port has long shipped sugar, rice, bauxite and timber, and it now also supports the offshore oil industry developed since the 2010s.
Sailors find shallow, muddy water and a sandbar at the river mouth, so larger ships must wait for the tide. Upriver they meet the long floating Demerara Harbour Bridge.
