The harbour

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, lies on the Caribbean coast at the mouth of the Ozama River. Founded by the Spanish in the late fifteenth century, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European city in the Americas, and its Colonial Zone, with the Alcázar de Colón, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The river port handles cruise ships and some cargo, while most container traffic uses the nearby ports of Haina and Caucedo. Sailors arriving at the Ozama see the old colonial walls and fortress close to the river mouth, with the open Caribbean swell meeting the city's rocky seafront.
