The harbour
San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, a US territory, lies on the island's north coast around a large sheltered bay facing the Atlantic.
Founded by the Spanish in the early sixteenth century, it was a key stronghold of their Caribbean empire. The massive forts of El Morro and San Cristóbal still guard the old walled city, a World Heritage Site. Today the port is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean and handles most of the island's imported cargo.
Entering the bay, a sailor passes directly beneath the walls of El Morro at the narrow harbour mouth.
