The harbour
Kingston, Jamaica's capital, lies on one of the largest natural harbours in the Caribbean, enclosed by the long sandspit of the Palisadoes, with the Blue Mountains rising behind the city.
At the tip of the spit stands Port Royal, once a notorious buccaneer base, much of which sank into the sea during an earthquake in 1692. Kingston grew up afterwards across the harbour. Today it is a major container transshipment port serving Caribbean and Panama Canal routes.
Entering the harbour, a sailor runs along the Palisadoes, past the airport runway, with the mountains towering over the bay.
