The harbour
Cartagena de Indias lies on Colombia's Caribbean coast, around a large, well-protected bay. Founded by the Spanish in the sixteenth century, it became one of the most important ports of the Spanish empire, and its walled old city and fortresses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today it is one of the busiest container ports in the Caribbean and a regular stop for cruise ships. Ships do not enter by the wide Bocagrande channel, which the Spanish blocked with a submerged wall in the eighteenth century. Instead they use the narrow Bocachica strait, passing between the old colonial forts of San Fernando and San José.
