La Guaira
Venezuela · Caribbean & Panama
The harbour
La Guaira is Venezuela's main port for the capital, Caracas, on the Caribbean coast just north of the city, from which it is separated by the coastal mountain range of El Ávila.
Since colonial times it has been the sea entrance to Caracas, and old Spanish forts still stand on the hillsides. The port handles imports of food and general cargo and receives occasional cruise ships, and the country's main international airport is nearby.
The coastline is narrow, with steep mountains rising almost from the water. In 1999 devastating mudslides struck this coast. A sailor sees green slopes climbing sharply right behind the harbour.
