The harbour
Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, lies on the north-west coast of Trinidad facing the Gulf of Paria. The sheltered gulf, between Trinidad and Venezuela, gives the city calm waters, and its port handles containers, regional transhipment cargo and ferries to Tobago.
The country's economy is built largely on oil and natural gas, and the city is famous for its Carnival and steelpan music. Ships coming from the Caribbean usually enter the gulf through the Bocas del Dragón, the Dragon's Mouths, a group of narrow channels between islands, with the forested Northern Range rising behind the city.
