The harbour
Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, lies on the west bank of the Suriname River, some distance upstream from the Atlantic. It was a Dutch colony for most of its history, and its historic centre of wooden colonial buildings is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, overlooked by Fort Zeelandia.
The port handles imports of food and goods and exports of rice, timber, bananas and other products; Suriname also has a long history of bauxite mining.
Sailors must cross a shallow bar at the river mouth and time their passage with the tide, then pass under the high Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge.
