The harbour
São Luís, capital of the Brazilian state of Maranhão, sits on an island in São Marcos Bay on the country's northern Atlantic coast.
The French founded it in 1612 before the Portuguese took over, and its historic centre, with houses faced in colourful tiles, is a World Heritage Site. Nearby, the port complex of Itaqui and the Ponta da Madeira terminal handle huge volumes of iron ore brought by rail from the Carajás mines, along with grain and fuel.
The bay has one of the largest tidal ranges in Brazil, and a sailor must handle strong tidal currents.
