The harbour
Recife, the capital of Pernambuco state, lies on Brazil's north-east Atlantic coast where the Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers meet the sea. The city takes its name from the long natural reef that runs parallel to the shore and shelters its harbour, and its many rivers and bridges have earned it comparisons with Venice.
In the seventeenth century the area was held by the Dutch, and it was long a centre of the sugar trade. Today much heavy cargo goes through the industrial port of Suape to the south. Sailors see the stone reef line breaking the swell just offshore, with an old lighthouse and fort near the harbour entrance.
