The harbour
Rio de Janeiro lies on Guanabara Bay on Brazil's southeastern Atlantic coast. The Portuguese royal court moved here in 1808, and the city was Brazil's capital until 1960.
Its port handles containers, steel, vehicles and general cargo, and a busy cruise terminal serves passenger ships, while ferries cross the bay to Niterói. The long Rio-Niterói Bridge spans the bay. Few harbour entrances are as dramatic: sailors pass beneath the granite peak of Sugarloaf Mountain, with the statue of Christ the Redeemer standing on Corcovado above the city.
