The harbour
Itajaí lies at the mouth of the Itajaí-Açu River in the state of Santa Catarina, on Brazil's southern Atlantic coast. Together with Navegantes on the opposite bank, it forms one of the country's important container port complexes.
The port is known for exports of frozen meat, especially chicken and pork, along with timber, ceramics and other goods from the region, and it is also a major fishing centre. The town has hosted stopovers of round-the-world sailing races. Sailors notice the river's current and the narrow channel between the two towns, which is prone to flooding after heavy rains upstream.
