The harbour

Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, lies on the north bank of the Río de la Plata where the wide estuary opens towards the Atlantic. The Spanish founded it as a fortified port in the eighteenth century, and its natural harbour has long competed with Buenos Aires across the river.

The port handles containers, frozen meat, grain, soy and transhipment cargo, along with cruise ships and ferries. In 1939, after the Battle of the River Plate, the German warship Graf Spee was scuttled off the city. Sailors notice the brown, silty water of the estuary and the Cerro, a hill topped by an old fortress, across the bay.
