The harbour

Buenos Aires stands on the western shore of the Río de la Plata, the wide estuary formed by the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. It is Argentina's capital and main port for containers and imported goods.

The old Puerto Madero docks, built in the late nineteenth century, proved too small and are now a district of restaurants and offices, while modern terminals lie further north. Much of Argentina's grain leaves through ports upriver on the Paraná.

Sailors notice the brown, silty water and how shallow the estuary is: large ships must stay in long dredged channels to reach the city.
