The harbour
Paranaguá lies on Paranaguá Bay in the state of Paraná, on Brazil's southern Atlantic coast. Founded in the seventeenth century, it is one of the oldest towns in southern Brazil and keeps a colonial centre.
Its port is one of the country's leading outlets for agricultural exports, especially soybeans, soy meal, corn and sugar, and also handles containers, fertilizers and vehicles. A historic railway descends through the rainforest of the Serra do Mar to reach the coast. Sailors entering the bay pass Ilha do Mel, a protected island at its mouth, and see long lines of bulk carriers waiting at anchor.
