Bahía Blanca
Argentina · South America
The harbour
Bahía Blanca stands at the head of a broad estuary on Argentina's Atlantic coast, in the south of Buenos Aires Province. Its port complex, including Ingeniero White and Puerto Galván, is one of the country's few deep-water harbours and serves the rich farmland of the Pampas.
Grain and oilseeds are the main exports, and the area is also a major centre for petrochemicals, with fuel and gas terminals along the channel. Argentina's principal naval base, Puerto Belgrano, lies nearby. Ships reach the port along a long dredged channel winding between wide tidal flats and salt marshes, where the tide covers and uncovers huge areas of mud.
