The harbour
Ushuaia, capital of Argentine Tierra del Fuego, lies on the northern shore of the Beagle Channel, close to the southern tip of South America. It is often called the southernmost city in the world and is the main departure port for cruise ships and expedition vessels heading to Antarctica.
The town began as a mission and a penal colony, and its former prison is now a museum. Fishing boats land southern king crab, known locally as centolla. Sailors in the channel see the jagged, snow-capped Martial Mountains behind the town and the red and white Les Eclaireurs lighthouse, and must be ready for sudden strong winds.
