Bridgetown
Barbados · Caribbean & Panama
The harbour
Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, lies on Carlisle Bay on the island's sheltered southwest coast. Barbados sits east of the main Caribbean island arc, so it is often the first landfall for vessels crossing the Atlantic from the east.
The Deep Water Harbour handles cruise ships, containers and general cargo, while the small inner harbour known as the Careenage reaches into the heart of the old town. Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflecting centuries as a British colonial port. Sailors notice the clear turquoise water of the bay and the steady trade winds.
