The harbour
Balboa is the port at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal, beside Panama City on the Gulf of Panama. It was built by the United States during the construction of the canal and is named after Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the first European to see the Pacific from the Americas.
Today it is a large container terminal where cargo is transferred between shipping lines, and it serves vessels about to transit or just leaving the canal.
Sailors arriving from the Pacific pass under the Bridge of the Americas and see dozens of ships at anchor offshore, waiting their turn for the locks.
