Colón
Panama · Caribbean & Panama
The harbour
Colón stands on Limón Bay at the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal. The city grew up with the Panama Railroad in the nineteenth century and then with the canal, and today it is home to the Colón Free Trade Zone, one of the largest free zones in the world.
Several large container terminals around the bay handle transhipment cargo between Atlantic and Pacific routes, while cruise ships call at Colón as well. Sailors arriving here see dozens of vessels lying at anchor in the bay, waiting their turn to transit the canal locks, and the long Atlantic Bridge spanning the canal entrance.
