The harbour
Iquique lies on the Pacific coast of northern Chile, on a narrow strip of land between the ocean and the Atacama Desert. It grew rich during the nitrate boom of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and some ornate buildings from that era survive in the town centre.
In 1879, during the War of the Pacific, the naval Battle of Iquique was fought just offshore, and Captain Arturo Prat became a Chilean national hero. Today the port handles minerals, fishmeal and imports for the city's large duty-free zone. Sailors see a huge sandy coastal escarpment towering behind the city, with the great dune of Cerro Dragón.
