The harbour
Guayaquil, Ecuador's largest city, stands on the west bank of the Guayas River, upstream from the Gulf of Guayaquil on the Pacific. It is the country's main port, shipping bananas, shrimp, cacao and other farm produce, and receiving most of Ecuador's imports. A deep-water terminal has also been built at Posorja, nearer the open gulf.
The city was founded by the Spanish in the sixteenth century and became an important shipbuilding centre. Ships reach the main port after a long passage up the estuary between mangroves and mudflats, and crews often see floating rafts of water hyacinth drifting down the brown river on the tide.
