The harbour
The Port of New York and New Jersey lies around Upper New York Bay, at the mouth of the Hudson River on the Atlantic coast. It is the largest port on the US East Coast, with its main container terminals at Newark and Elizabeth in New Jersey and on Staten Island.
For generations it was the main arrival point for immigrants to the United States, many of whom passed through Ellis Island. Ships entering from the ocean pass under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, and then see the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline, with busy ferry, tug and barge traffic all around.
