The harbour
Halifax, Nova Scotia, has one of the largest natural harbours in the world, deep and ice-free all year. Founded by the British in 1749, it has long been a naval base and is today home to Canada's Atlantic fleet.
In both world wars convoys gathered in Bedford Basin before crossing the Atlantic, and in 1917 a collision between two ships caused the Halifax Explosion, which destroyed much of the city. Today the port handles containers and cruise ships, and Pier 21 recalls the immigrants who landed there.
Sailors often meet thick fog as they approach past Georges Island and McNabs Island.
