The harbour
Saint John, New Brunswick, lies at the mouth of the Saint John River on the Bay of Fundy. It was settled by Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution and is one of the oldest incorporated cities in Canada.
The port handles containers, bulk cargo and cruise ships, and Canada's largest oil refinery stands nearby.
The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world. At Saint John the incoming tide is strong enough to push the river backwards at the Reversing Falls, a famous gorge in the city. Sailors must also expect frequent thick fog in summer.
