The harbour
Veracruz lies on the Gulf of Mexico in eastern Mexico and is the country's oldest port.
Hernán Cortés landed here in 1519, and for centuries it was the main link between New Spain and Europe; the island fortress of San Juan de Ulúa still guards the harbour. Today it is one of Mexico's busiest ports, handling containers, vehicles, grain and general cargo, and it has expanded with a large new section to the north.
The city is known for its music and lively waterfront. In the cooler months sailors must watch for the nortes, strong northerly winds that sweep down the Gulf.
