The harbour
Acapulco sits on a deep, horseshoe-shaped bay on the Pacific coast of the state of Guerrero, ringed by steep green hills.
In the Spanish colonial era it was the American end of the Manila galleon route, which carried silver west and Asian silks and porcelain back across the Pacific; the Fort of San Diego was built to guard that trade. Today the port mainly serves cruise ships, yachts and local fishing boats, and the city is best known as a beach resort and for the cliff divers of La Quebrada.
Sailors should respect the season: the coast is exposed to Pacific hurricanes.
