Mazatlán
Mexico · North Pacific
The harbour
Mazatlán lies on the Pacific coast of the state of Sinaloa, near the entrance to the Gulf of California. It is home to one of Mexico's largest shrimp fishing fleets and also lands tuna, while its port handles cargo, cruise ships and a ferry service across the gulf to La Paz in Baja California.
The old town has a well-preserved nineteenth-century centre and a long seafront promenade. Sailors approaching the port see El Faro, a lighthouse perched high on the rocky hill of Cerro del Crestón, one of the tallest natural lighthouse sites in the world.
