The harbour
The Port of Los Angeles lies in San Pedro Bay in southern California, next to the separate Port of Long Beach. Together they form the busiest container port complex in the United States and the main gateway for trade with Asia.
The harbour is largely artificial, protected by a long breakwater built in the early twentieth century, and it also has a cruise terminal at San Pedro and a fishing fleet. Ships enter through Angels Gate, marked by a lighthouse at the end of the breakwater, and then pass beneath the green Vincent Thomas Bridge, often after waiting at anchor offshore.
