The harbour
Seattle lies on Elliott Bay, on the eastern shore of Puget Sound in Washington State, with the Olympic Mountains to the west and Mount Rainier to the southeast.
The city boomed as a supply port during the Klondike gold rush of the late 1890s. Today its container terminals are run jointly with neighbouring Tacoma, it is a main departure port for cruises to Alaska, and it is home port to much of the North Pacific fishing fleet. Washington State Ferries carry passengers across the Sound.
A sailor shares busy waters with ferries and notices the long fjord-like reach of the Sound.
