The harbour
The Port of Oakland lies on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay in California, across the water from San Francisco. In the nineteenth century the city became the western terminus of the first transcontinental railroad, and it later became one of the first major ports on the West Coast to adopt container shipping.
Today it is primarily a container port, handling trade with Asia, including exports of farm produce from California's Central Valley. Sailors reach it through the Golden Gate and under the Bay Bridge, and notice the tall container cranes lining the shore and the frequent summer fog over the bay.
