The harbour

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky lies on Avacha Bay on the Pacific coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. It was founded in 1740 by Vitus Bering's expedition and named after its two ships, the St Peter and St Paul.

The city has no road connection to the rest of Russia, so nearly everything arrives by sea or air. The port is a centre for fishing fleets catching salmon and crab, and the bay hosts Russia's Pacific nuclear submarine base at Vilyuchinsk.

Sailors entering the sheltered bay see the snow-covered cones of the Koryaksky and Avachinsky volcanoes rising above the city.
