The harbour
Apra Harbor on the west coast of Guam is the best deep-water harbour in the Mariana Islands. It is sheltered by the Orote Peninsula to the south and by a long breakwater built out to Cabras Island on the north.
The commercial port handles nearly all of the island's imported goods, while much of the harbour belongs to Naval Base Guam, an important US forward base in the western Pacific. The island was fought over in the Second World War and retaken by American forces in 1944.
Sailors notice the clear tropical water and coral reefs on either side of the entrance channel.
