The harbour
Honolulu Harbor lies on the south shore of Oahu and is the main commercial port of Hawaii. Because the islands produce little of what they consume, most food, fuel and goods arrive here by sea, many in containers from the US mainland.
The harbour also serves inter-island barges and cruise ships, which berth near the historic Aloha Tower. Pearl Harbor, the US naval base attacked in 1941, lies a few miles to the west.
Sailors entering through the channel in the reef see the crater of Diamond Head to the east and feel the steady northeast trade winds.
