The harbour
Ponta Delgada is the largest city of the Azores, on the south coast of São Miguel island in the middle of the North Atlantic. It is the islands' main commercial port and a regular stop for cruise ships, with fishing boats, inter-island ferries and a marina used by yachts crossing the ocean.
The town is known for its buildings of dark volcanic stone trimmed with white, including the old city gates on the waterfront. São Miguel is green and volcanic, with crater lakes and hot springs inland. Sailors in these waters often see whales and dolphins, and the island's steep green hills rise behind the long breakwater.
