The harbour
Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, lies on Faxaflói Bay on the island's southwest coast. It is the northernmost capital of a sovereign state.
Fishing has always been central to Iceland's economy, and trawlers still work from the Old Harbour, where whale-watching boats and restaurants now line the quays. Container ships use the Sundahöfn terminal, and cruise ships call in summer. The glass Harpa concert hall stands on the waterfront.
Sailors approaching see the flat-topped mountain Esja across the bay, and must be ready for sudden changes of weather, strong winds and long winter nights.
